5 Signs that Your Car has Ignition Coil Problems

Anytime you notice the below signs, note that your ignition coil is problematic

  1. Stalling and Misfiring
  2. Can’t Start the Car
  3. Less Miles to the Gallon
  4. Check Engine Light Illuminated on the Dash
  5. Bad Spark Plugs
  1. Stalling and Misfiring
If you notice a strange noise, accompanied by poor response from the engine, thereby leading to jerks or vibration when idling. These can be a tell-tale sign that the ignition coil is on its way out.
  2. Can’t Start the Car
If the spark plugs are not receiving the needed charge, the engine will not fire up properly.
  3. Less Miles to the Gallon
When your ignition coil malfunctions, it can create disparities in the oxygen sensor, sending the engine more fuel than is required. Putting this unspent fuel through your vehicle engine is also incredibly bad for the associated systems. It can cause damage to the catalytic converter, which is often an expensive part to replace.
  4. Check Engine Light Illuminated on the Dash
Codes P0300 to P0312 indicate engine misfiring, which could be an ignition coil problem. While codes P0350 to P0362 are reserved on all systems for ignition coil issues. If you notice any of these, you can get down to a mechanic who can perform an OBD-II scan or get a scanner so that you can check the codes yourself.
  5. Bad Spark Plugs:
Faulty or worn-out spark plugs can often draw more charge than expected from the engine. It can often put too much strain on the ignition coil, damaging it over time. If you find you have spark plug problems, it’s worth checking the ignition coil as well.
